The new Dalstunnel has been approved for public use and will open as scheduled on 18 July, the Faroese national broadcaster KVF reports.

The Landsverk (Public Works Agency) and the Labour and Fire Safety Authority reviewed the project, construction, and safety systems in the tunnel. Final approval required a successful evacuation drill, which was conducted on Friday, 10 July.

Around 40 personnel from the police, Húsavík and Sands fire brigades, health services, ambulance service, and Landsverk participated in the drill. They tested the emergency plan, technology, manual operations, and communication systems in the tunnel. Each party had designated observers who later submitted reports on the exercise.

The police, as the lead coordinator for the emergency preparedness, compiled the results and approved the tunnel’s readiness. Landsverk reviewed the drill’s findings and confirmed that the Dalstunnel meets all safety requirements. The Labour and Fire Safety Authority has also issued fire safety approval for public use.
