Kuopio moves to restore Minna Canth’s 19th-century home

Kuopio city officials have begun preparations to renovate Kanttila, the 19th-century wooden house where Finnish writer Minna Canth once lived and ran a shop, Yle reports.

A cross-party council agreement signed in May provided the political backing needed to advance the project, according to Mikko Ripatti, the city’s director of education and culture. The agreement commits six council groups to supporting the restoration, with the city expected to cover roughly one-third of the estimated €5.5 million cost. The remaining funds would come from the state and private donors.

Negotiations with cultural operators, associations, and potential state funders are now underway. Ripatti stressed the importance of state involvement given the building’s national cultural significance.

The over-200-year-old protected structure, owned by the Minna Canth House association, sits on city-owned land near Kuopio’s market square. Its interior will be fully dismantled during the renovation.

Anja Lappi, the association’s executive director, called the May agreement the first concrete step in a decade-long effort. She estimates preparatory work could begin next year, with the full renovation potentially starting in 2028 if progress continues.

Rising costs have pushed the price tag to €5.5 million, up €1.5 million from a decade ago. Despite discussions about establishing a foundation, no concrete steps have been taken, and Lappi described the financial situation as still difficult.
