North Jutland Police report a rise in burglary cases this summer compared to the same period last year, with thieves exploiting empty homes during the holiday season.
Police Commissioner Preben Klitgaard, head of the force’s crime prevention unit, advises residents to make homes appear occupied by leaving lights or televisions on timers. Overgrown lawns can signal absence, so cutting the grass before leaving is recommended.
Neighbours can also help deter burglars. Parking a neighbour’s car in the driveway or informing the community of travel plans through schemes like Nabohjælp increases vigilance, Klitgaard said.
Valuables such as cash, jewellery, and expensive watches should be secured, and owners are advised to photograph high-value items. Registering surveillance cameras with the police database Polcam can assist investigations, as footage helps identify suspects quickly.
