Atso Almila, 73, remains active as a conductor, composer, and teacher, with engagements across Finland and Europe, reports Yle.
At the Heinävesi Music Days, where he serves as both conductor and board chair for the third consecutive year, Almila described the event as valuable training for young musicians. He praised its intimate atmosphere, scenic venues, and the high-calibre orchestra blending students and professionals.
Almila has composed annually for the festival’s Novus Brass Septet, this year contributing a lighthearted piece titled Low Water Blues—a nod to the low water levels threatening boat access to Heinävesi.
Among his former students is Emilia Hoving, now an internationally successful conductor. Almila still offers her occasional feedback, noting that conductors rarely receive it. He also admires older colleagues who continue working: Herbert Blomstedt, who turns 99 this month, and Jorma Panula, 95, who still teaches.
After the festival, Almila will spend the rest of the summer in Kuopio and at his cottage in Karttula, focusing on administrative tasks and a major writing project.
