At least one person has died from salmonella in Finland, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reports.

A second death in Finland is suspected to be linked to salmonella, though this has not been confirmed.

A salmonella outbreak spread across ten European countries between January and May, with 109 confirmed cases. Eight people required hospital treatment. The outbreak primarily affected adult women.

The confirmed and suspected salmonella deaths in Finland have been linked to a Finnish sprout producer.

Investigations trace the outbreak to alfalfa sprout seeds contaminated in India and imported to Europe. The epidemic likely began spreading in Europe in October 2025.

The ECDC currently assesses the risk of salmonella infection from consuming sprouts as moderate to low.

Case numbers have declined after suspected contaminated seed products and sprouted seed products were recalled and destroyed.

Common salmonella symptoms include diarrhoea and fever. The illness is not typically life-threatening for otherwise healthy individuals, though the elderly, children, and those with underlying conditions are at higher risk.
