Thousands of pine processionary moth caterpillars have massed near a wind turbine on eastern Gotland, prompting a public warning from local authorities, Swedish broadcaster SVT reports.

The species, long present in southern Gotland, has now spread farther north than previously recorded. The county administrative board advises the public to keep their distance.

Biologist Didrik Vanhoenacker of the Swedish Museum of Natural History said the caterpillars release barbed hairs when threatened. The hairs, which can spread up to 100 metres, carry a toxin that causes eczema, itching, and rashes if they penetrate the skin.

If exposed, people should rinse thoroughly with water and wash clothing at a minimum of 60°C, he said.

Vanhoenacker urged caution in affected areas: “Don’t touch the hairy caterpillars. If you see many in the trees, don’t walk beneath them. Keep your distance.”
