Pirkanmaa police have received around ten reports in two weeks from adults posing as minors online to expose suspected paedophiles, a volume normally seen in a full year, Yle reports.
Detective Chief Inspector Tommi Juvonen of the Central Finland Police said such “sting operations” rarely meet the legal criteria for a crime, as the recipient is an adult, not a child. He called the work “frustrating” because the reports typically lead nowhere.
Juvonen warned that these private investigations can also disrupt ongoing police probes by unintentionally influencing suspect behaviour, compromising evidence, or complicating efforts to determine if the suspect has contacted actual minors.
While discouraging vigilante activity, Juvonen urged the public to report clear suspicions of child sexual abuse to police, such as inappropriate messages or sexual images involving minors.
