The Faroese government will keep small coastal fishing vessels in the fishing day allocation system, pending a review of the scheme’s impact on catch quotas.
Fisheries Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen told parliament the fleet, known as Group 5, lands a significant share of small fish, justifying its inclusion. He acknowledged that the effects of excluding Group 5 from the system have not been studied.
With current fishing conditions strong, the minister said the review may allow for additional days allocated to Group 5 in the coming years.
The exchange followed a parliamentary question from Sámal Petur í Grund, with all 138 such questions now answered this session.
