A car was illegally brought onto the Länsiratikka construction site in Helsinki’s Riistavuori district over the weekend, with the words “Riistavuori suojeluun!” (Protect Riistavuori!) written on its side, the project reported on its Facebook page.

The site is part of the Länsiratikka project, which includes developing Helsinki’s western tram network, street environments, municipal infrastructure, and cycle paths. Work involves blasting and excavation.

Katerina Zaitseva, construction director at Helsinki Region Transport, told Yle the vehicle was discovered Monday morning during routine pre-work inspections. She noted that several of its wheel bolts had been removed, making it unsafe to move. Attempting to relocate it risked detached wheels, potential damage to the vehicle’s underside, and an oil leak that could harm the environment.

Zaitseva said unauthorized entry and the introduction of a foreign vehicle pose safety risks to both outsiders and workers. The incident also caused additional work and costs.

Over the weekend, someone also filled in blast holes at the site. Police have been notified of the trespassing, the dumped car, and the tampering with the blast holes.

Zaitseva believes the message on the car was intended as opposition to the project. “Such projects always spark debate, both for and against. I value discussion, but it must be open and safe—not like this,” she said.
