The Helsinki Court of Appeal has revised a ruling in a major counterfeit money case, clearing one of the main defendants of the most serious charges.

Ahmed Bin Sherif was initially sentenced to over four years in prison by the Itä-Uudenmaa District Court for aggravated counterfeiting, but the appeals court overturned those convictions. Instead, Sherif was found guilty of aiding and abetting aggravated counterfeiting and sentenced to 18 months in prison.

The case involved nearly €190,000 in counterfeit banknotes shipped from France to Finland via two express parcels in spring 2025. Authorities stated the intention was to circulate the fake currency.

The appeals court ruled that evidence did not prove Sherif played a significant role in the counterfeiting itself. While two co-defendants had initially implicated him, they later changed their statements in the appeals court and no longer identified Sherif as a perpetrator. The court noted that other evidence did not link Sherif to the shipments beyond his own admissions.

Sherif was released from pretrial detention in April following a court order. The ruling can still be appealed to the Supreme Court.
