A week-long abandoned house fair in Kangasniemi has yielded unexpected results, with two properties sold, two rented, and negotiations underway for at least four more, Yle reports.

Organized by the municipality in early July, the event showcased nearly a dozen long-vacant homes, most located in rural areas up to 20 kilometers from the nearest shop. The sold properties include farms built in the 1910s and 1920s, while the rented ones are 1950s-era veterans’ homes.

One of the homes still under negotiation is a log house abandoned for 30 years. Before the fair, its entrance floor had collapsed, and its kitchen hosted a massive ant nest. Despite minimal preparation—only cleaning was done—the property attracted multiple offers, including one cash-in-hand proposal, according to Anita Partti, representing the owning family. The family has struggled to decide on a buyer for the emotionally significant childhood home.

Teija Skyttä, Kangasniemi’s vitality coordinator, attributed the success to the fair’s format, which allowed visitors to tour multiple homes at once rather than scheduling individual viewings. The municipality now plans to create a dedicated section on its website for listing abandoned homes for sale or rent.

Attendees came from across Finland, including buyers and renters with no prior connection to Kangasniemi. The initiative aims to attract new residents, entrepreneurs, and visibility to the area.
