A young man stabbed on Helsinki’s Mannerheimintie early Sunday remains in hospital with serious injuries, though police say his life is not in immediate danger.

The victim, born in 1999, suffered deep wounds to his torso and leg from a bladed weapon, according to lead investigator Jari Korkalainen. Authorities have already been able to interview him.

The altercation began outside the Apollon restaurant in the city centre around 3:30 a.m. Police report that two groups inside the venue had a verbal dispute, but no violence occurred indoors. The fight escalated only after they stepped outside.

A 43-year-old man, born in 1983, has been detained near the scene and is suspected of attempted murder. The victim is separately suspected of basic assault. The suspect and victim are not believed to have known each other prior to the incident, Korkalainen said.

Police aim to question the suspect Monday afternoon. The motive remains unclear.
