Danish high school students are questioning their higher education plans as artificial intelligence reshapes the job market, public broadcaster DR reports.

The application deadline for university programmes under the first admissions round passed at noon today. Studievalg Danmark, which advises students on education choices, says inquiries about AI have surged. About one in ten students now raise the issue during individual counselling sessions.

“For some, AI is a gamechanger,” said Mathilde Tronegård, the organisation’s director. “They doubt whether their chosen path will remain valuable or if they’ll be replaced by AI. Others are simply curious.”

Dansk Erhverv, a business association, has also reconsidered its usual guidance. Mads Eriksen Storm, head of knowledge and innovation, said he no longer feels confident recommending specific “safe” fields of study.

“The technologies emerging have the potential to transform the labour market far more than we’re used to,” he said.

Still, he offered one enduring piece of advice: “Figure out what you’re passionate about and get good at it.”

Demand for economists, lawyers, digital transformation specialists, teachers, social workers, nurses, and other hands-on professions will persist, the association believes. With Denmark’s ageing population and shrinking youth cohort, Eriksen Storm expects strong job prospects for graduates.
