Copenhagen Police will increase staffing at passport control at Copenhagen Airport this weekend to address long queues, the force announced in a press release.

The move follows an earlier boost of 130 full-time equivalent positions last week. Additional officers will now be added, though police have not specified the exact number. DR News was unable to obtain further details from Copenhagen Police.

The decision comes amid ongoing issues with the new Entry/Exit System (EES), an electronic passport control system introduced in April for travellers outside Europe and the Schengen area. The system replaces passport stamps with digital registration of passport details, entry and exit times, and biometric data such as fingerprints and facial photos.

Travellers must input their data at self-service kiosks supervised by border guards, but the system has caused delays at several European airports, leading to missed flights.

Industry groups ACI Europe, Airlines 4 Europe, and IATA stated yesterday that the situation has reached a “critical point.”

From next weekend, police will also call in more temporary staff to manage the peak summer season. After the summer, authorities will assess long-term solutions.

In the meantime, the National Police aim to open automatic border control eGates to third-country nationals as soon as possible to improve efficiency. Initially, this will apply to citizens of the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and Japan.
