Kjerkol seeks political comeback after plagiarism scandal in Norway

Ingvild Kjerkol, who stepped down as Norway’s Minister of Health and Care earlier this year after her master’s thesis was disqualified due to plagiarism, has announced her intention to continue her political career. She expressed her motivation to serve the Labour Party, stating, “Norway needs a strong Labour Party. I have a high work capacity, and my time as a minister showed that I can get things done.”

Kjerkol emphasized the importance of having a political majority in Trøndelag that understands the various challenges facing Norway, asserting that she still has much to accomplish.

In the 2021 elections, Kjerkol led the Labour Party’s list in Nord-Trøndelag. Currently, the party holds two parliamentary seats from the region, but recent polls indicate that they may lose one of these seats.

Kjerkol resigned in April as Health and Care Minister after the Student Affairs Committee at Nord University deemed her guilty of cheating on her master’s thesis, a decision she has appealed.

Political commentator Linda Bjørgan noted that Kjerkol likely needed the summer to reflect on her situation before responding to nomination inquiries, as politicians require voter trust, which was undermined by the plagiarism allegations. She suggested that Kjerkol hopes voters will have forgotten the scandal by next fall’s elections.

Bjørgan acknowledged Kjerkol’s strong standing within the Labour Party both locally and nationally, highlighting her respect as a politician. Whether voters will forgive her for the plagiarism issue remains to be seen until the 2025 election.
