The Faroese government is entering urgent negotiations with Greenland to increase its cod quota in Greenlandic waters and regain access to ray fishing, according to Faroese Minister of Foreign Affairs and Fisheries Bárður á Steig Nielsen.

Last week, Greenland’s Fisheries Minister Peter Borg met with Nielsen in the Faroe Islands, where they signed a new bilateral fisheries agreement. While the meeting did not address quotas or formal requests, Nielsen stated that Greenland’s minister understood the Faroese position.

The Faroe Islands previously held a ray fishing quota under the EU-Faroe fisheries agreement, but since Brexit, Faroese vessels have been unable to fish for rays in Greenlandic waters.
