Man arrested in Seinäjoki basement murder case
South Ostrobothnia District Court on Friday remanded a 55-year-old Alajärvi man in custody on suspicion of murder in the 2021 Seinäjoki basement killing, Yle reports.
The victim, a man in his 40s, was last seen in late November 2020 in Seinäjoki’s Kasperi district. Initially treated as a missing person case, the investigation later shifted to homicide after the body was found in the basement of an apartment building in June 2021.
The custody hearing was held behind closed doors, with case documents sealed. Media were permitted to film only the first few minutes. The suspect did not conceal his face in court.
Police previously detained and later released five individuals in summer 2021 in connection with the case. The newly remanded man was among them. Prosecutor Esa Luomala requested the detention.
The extensive pre-trial investigation, which spanned years, will now move to the prosecutor’s office for consideration of charges.
