Simon El-Zeinab, a member of Denmark’s National Integration Council, sparked controversy after expressing condolences on social media for the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. In a now-deleted Facebook post, he stated, “May Allah accept him among the martyrs” in Arabic. This statement led to significant backlash, prompting El-Zeinab to resign from the council, where he was appointed by the government.

As a result of the criticism, El-Zeinab has also been suspended from his position as a social pedagogue in Aarhus Municipality while officials conduct a legal review of the situation. The municipality plans to investigate whether it is appropriate for an employee to praise an organization like Hamas, which is listed as a terrorist entity by the EU.

City Council member Anders Winnerskjold emphasized the incompatibility of El-Zeinab’s statements with his duties, stating, “It is very problematic to have such views while working in Aarhus Municipality.” El-Zeinab previously referred to Haniyeh as “a great leader” and expressed sympathies for his death, generating further discontent among officials.

Council member Jakob Søgaard Clausen remarked that El-Zeinab’s comments crossed a line, especially given his influence in marginalized communities. Dismissing the notion that an apology would mitigate concerns, he stated, “it reflects deeper beliefs that are troubling.”

Additionally, Denmark’s Minister for Immigration and Integration, Kaare Dybvad, expressed his disapproval, questioning how someone could serve on a national council while glorifying a terrorist leader. El-Zeinab, who has worked on integration in Aarhus and gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic, claims that his words have been manipulated by certain politicians and media to discredit him.
