A district court in North Savo has sentenced a 23-year-old man to life imprisonment for the murder of his father, who was shot in the neck with an air rifle in Kiuruvesi in March 2025, Yle reports.
The court ruled that the man acted with premeditation. Evidence suggested he had first attempted to kill his father by setting fire to their home or at least causing carbon monoxide poisoning.
The defendant denied intentional homicide but admitted causing his father’s death through gross negligence, arguing he was guilty of gross manslaughter. The court found that financial difficulties and efforts to conceal mismanagement of the father’s finances were partial motives.
The man was remanded in custody and ordered to be transferred to Kuopio Prison. The verdict is not yet final. Yle has chosen not to name the convicted man to protect the victim’s identity.
