Main rail line disruptions linked to vandalism and construction damage
Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency reports repeated disruptions on the main rail line since mid-June, with most caused by vandalism or damage during track work, such as severed cables. The remaining issues stem from overhead line faults that routine maintenance failed to detect.
Agency unit head Teemu Poussu said efforts to prevent construction-related damage include emphasizing caution during excavation, though not all incidents can be avoided due to human error.
On Thursday, a reported overhead line fault between Järvenpää and Ainola caused 10–15 minute delays on main line services, continuing a pattern of summer disruptions. Similar faults have caused significant delays on routes between Helsinki and Oulu or Rovaniemi, as well as between Järvenpää and Tuusula’s Jokela, where a digger severed a cable during track work last week. A comparable incident occurred the week prior.
