A 39-year-old caseworker was stabbed with a knife by a 59-year-old male resident at a care facility for mentally vulnerable people in Hammel on Wednesday, DR reports.

The attack occurred during a conversation about the resident’s life situation, according to Ulrik Johansen, director of Social and Health Services in Favrskov Municipality. He said the resident allegedly drew a knife and stabbed the employee at the end of their meeting at the Jagtvej facility.

The caseworker was taken to hospital in critical condition. Her condition is now serious but stable, and her family has been notified.

East Jutland Police arrested the resident shortly after the incident. He has been charged with attempted murder and will appear in a preliminary court hearing at Randers Court on Thursday at 10:30, where prosecutors will request a closed session.

The resident had lived at the facility for about a year and had no prior history of violence, Johansen said. No special precautions were taken for the meeting, as there was no indication of alarming news to be delivered.

Johansen added it is too early to determine whether the incident will lead to changes in the municipality’s practices. Both residents and staff have been offered crisis support.
