Danish criminals are reportedly escalating their operations by hiring young Swedes to carry out violent crimes on demand. Torben Svarrer, a senior police inspector in the National Unit for Special Crimes (NSK), has noted a concerning trend in which organized crime groups in Denmark are willing to pay for such “dirty work.” Recent arrests include two Swedish citizens under 18, charged with attempted murder in Denmark.

Svarrer explains that young men from Sweden, often vulnerable individuals who may have run away from foster care or other assistance programs, are being lured through social media. Criminals use these platforms to offer sums starting at around 200,000 kroner (approximately $29,000) for engaging in violent acts, including murder. While he cannot comment on specific cases, Svarrer emphasizes that this pattern, although currently involving predominantly Swedish youths, could just as easily include young Danes since they have access to the same networks.

Recent incidents showcase this disturbing trend, including a 16-year-old Swedish man arrested in Copenhagen for attempted murder and illegal weapon possession following a shooting. Another case involved a 17-year-old Swedish national charged with attempted murder in Kolding.

Svarrer acknowledges the broader implications, stating that this activity is not limited to Copenhagen but is also observed in Jutland. While he refrains from using the term “child soldiers,” he underscores the seriousness of the situation, as extremely young individuals are engaging in life-threatening criminal activities to gain status. The NSK collaborates daily with Swedish police to prevent these youths from committing violent crimes in Denmark, achieving some success, but challenges remain.
