Motorists in Jyväskylä are being fined for defying a closure of the Länsiväylä bridges, which are undergoing major repairs, Yle reports.
The bridges, a key route to the Nova Hospital, are closed to private vehicles, with only emergency services, public transport, and hospital staff permitted to cross. Pedestrians and cyclists are unaffected.
Police have issued fines to multiple drivers for violating the restriction, which is intended to prevent congestion and ensure emergency vehicle access. A single lane remains open on the bridges.
Social media users have criticised the work zone signage as unclear or poorly placed, with some arguing the signs contain too much text to read while driving. The contractor, Welado, insists the detour and warning signs are adequate and visible in all directions.
“If drivers pay attention to the signs and the road environment, they get the information they need,” said Arto Hyvärinen, Welado’s regional manager. He noted that disregard for temporary traffic arrangements at construction sites is common.
The Länsiväylä bridges normally carry about 10,000 vehicles daily. The repair work, which includes replacing deck structures, railings, and lighting, began on 15 June and is scheduled for completion in November, though the aim is to reopen to traffic earlier, by late autumn at the latest.
Traffic arrangements were planned in cooperation with the city of Jyväskylä, the Central Finland Vitality Centre, and regional maintenance authorities. Details of detours are available on the city’s website.
