Finnish researchers have developed an award-winning method to teach children about artificial intelligence, Yle reports.

The learning environment, created as part of the Generation AI research project, received the European Union’s Digital Skills Award this week. The tools allow students to build their own language models, experiment with machine learning, and examine how social media algorithms function.

The applications also highlight ethical issues related to AI, helping young users evaluate technology critically. Professor Matti Tedre of the University of Eastern Finland, who leads the project, said the goal is to help youth understand how AI systems influence what they see online, how they are profiled, and how decisions affecting them are made.

The tools have previously won awards at the international EdMedia education conference and the ICALT technology conference. The applications and learning materials are openly available and have been used in over 50 countries.

The Generation AI project involves researchers from the University of Eastern Finland, the University of Helsinki, the University of Oulu, and Code School Finland.
