The Faroese Teachers’ Union has criticised the high number of temporary teaching positions in the country’s primary schools, with 106 of 158 vacancies for the coming school year listed as fixed-term contracts.

According to a study by the Department of Educational Sciences, 85 people completed teacher training in 2023, 2024, and 2025, but only 55 now work in primary schools—and just nine hold permanent positions.

Jacob Eli S. Olsen, chair of the Teachers’ Union, told public broadcaster KVF that the reliance on temporary contracts is unacceptable.
