The Faroese Agriculture Agency and the Ministry of Labour are developing a long-term plan to make the Faroe Islands 50% self-sufficient in food that can be grown well locally, national broadcaster KVF reports.
The plan also includes increasing meat exports. A review found that current Faroese agricultural subsidies are significantly lower than those in the Nordic countries and the EU.
Jacob Vestergaard, a government minister, told MP Sámal Petur í Grund that subsidies will be increased to make a tangible difference for those working in agriculture. The plan also aims to simplify access to loans for tenant farmers and review the tenant system.
