Middle school students in the Faroe Islands are largely satisfied with the sex education they receive, according to a recent evaluation reported by Faroese broadcaster KVF.
Health officials conducted follow-up surveys last school year, with students offering positive feedback on the instruction. Education Minister Bárður á Lakjuni confirmed in a response to MP Bjørt Lind that two health educators have provided sex education in middle schools since August 2024.
All first-year students receive four 45-minute sessions covering sexuality, reproductive health, contraception, boundaries, pornography, diversity, sexual rights, and consent. The curriculum is tailored to the students’ developmental stage.
This school year, third-year students also received dedicated instruction on consent. The health educators work closely with school leadership and staff, and a psychologist from the national health service has contributed to the program, providing additional training.
The educators regularly travel to Norway for further training to update their knowledge, the minister added.
