The Faroese horse population has surpassed 100 after a Russian mare named Freia gave birth to a foal named Tíati, meaning “100,” at the Faroese Agricultural Agency.
Jóna Ólavsdóttir, an equine specialist at the agency, called the milestone “fantastic” and credited systematic breeding efforts for the growth. She noted that recent improvements in record-keeping, seed selection, and export regulations have strengthened the program.
The work involves collaboration between the Faroese Horse Association, the Agricultural Agency, and Norway, with a shared breeding line supporting the population increase.
While exporting Faroese horses is not currently possible, Ólavsdóttir said demand exists abroad for the small, hardy breed, particularly for riding schools and private owners seeking unique horses. Two additional foals have since been born, bringing the total to 102.
