Today marks the last day Danes can use the physical Rejsekort travel card, with queues stretching for hours at Copenhagen’s main train station as commuters scramble for its replacement, reports DR.

The only option for those wanting to keep a physical card is the new basiskort, available in person only at DSB’s sales point at Hovedbanegården—the sole location on Zealand offering personal versions. Pensioner Hans Tage Hansen criticised the lack of staff for the final-day rush, while Martin Larsen, who waited three hours, called the situation “hellish.”

Two versions of the basiskort exist: a personal card offering discounted fares for pensioners or disabled travellers, and an anonymous version purchasable and rechargeable with cash or card at DSB 7-Eleven shops and select kiosks.

Rejsekort customer director Jens Willars said 3.3 million users have adopted the Rejsekort app, while 185,000 have ordered a basiskort. DSB communications chief Niels-Otto Fisker acknowledged the frustration, telling Ekstra Bladet: “We’ve done what we can to make the wait as tolerable as possible. But waiting is irritating—that I agree with.”
