Reindeer involved in fatal Kuusamo crash

Police have confirmed to Yle that a reindeer was involved in a fatal car crash late Saturday night in Kuusamo, Finland.

The accident occurred at 23:20 on the Kemijärvi road, about 20 kilometres from Kuusamo centre towards Ruka. A car had veered off the road to the right in its direction of travel. The sole occupant, the driver, was pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle sustained severe damage.

Witnesses who arrived after the crash reported seeing animal remains near the accident site over a stretch of about 100 metres. Mourners have since placed numerous candles at the location.

Authorities are investigating the incident as a case of endangering traffic safety and determining the cause of death.
