Two foreigners crossed into Finland illegally from Russia in Ilomantsi

Finnish border guards in North Karelia detained two foreign nationals on Monday after they allegedly entered Finland illegally from Russia near the Möhkö area of Ilomantsi, state broadcaster Yle reports.

The arrests were made without incident. Both individuals have applied for asylum in Finland.

Authorities have notified the Russian border representative in the Suojärvi region. The two are now undergoing EU screening procedures, which include identity verification, security and public health assessments, and registration in the Eurodac database.
