All women in the Faroe Islands who experience a miscarriage will now be entitled to state-funded psychological support, according to an announcement from the national broadcaster KVF.
Previously, only women who miscarried after the 12th week of pregnancy were eligible for such assistance. The new policy extends coverage to include miscarriages occurring at or before the 12th week.
The Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing had previously offered psychological therapy to adults who suffered from long-term effects of childhood sexual abuse as part of a 2016 action plan. However, this provision was set to expire under the 2023โ2028 plan for addressing hardship in relationships and close partnerships.
Instead, the ministry has directed the Ministry of Health and Welfare to expand the group eligible for state-subsidised psychological treatment. This change removes the age limit of 25 for those seeking therapy due to childhood sexual abuse.
Individuals will need a referral from a municipal doctor to access the service. Patients will cover 60% of the cost, while the health insurance system will cover the remaining 40%.
