The Swedish government has announced an inquiry into how the Swedish language can be strengthened, particularly in areas with high levels of social exclusion, SVT Nyheter reports.
The investigation will map and compile knowledge on the status of Swedish in different parts of the country, its impact on integration and social exclusion, and propose measures to improve opportunities and incentives for more people to learn the language, according to a government press release.
“Being able to speak Swedish is crucial for establishing oneself in society. When people can communicate and understand each other, both social cohesion and the ability to be part of the community are strengthened,” said Education and Integration Minister Simona Mohamsson (Liberal Party).
The findings are to be presented by 31 August 2027.
