Residents protest military buildup at Aarhus Airport
A new peace group, Fredsgruppen Djursland, will gather today at Aarhus Airport to protest against militarisation and the planned deployment of a ground-based air defence system at the site, which the Danish military has partially acquired.
Local organiser Thomas Nørgaard said the group fears the airport’s military role could make the area a target, and called the broader arms buildup “wild and dangerous.”
“I don’t believe arming up is the path to security and peace,” Nørgaard said. “Many treat it as obvious, but we need a far more nuanced conversation.”
While some in the group oppose the nearby air defence system specifically, Nørgaard said his own motivation stems from a general conviction that militarisation is counterproductive.
He acknowledged the group is in the minority on Djursland, where earlier public reactions to the air defence plans were largely positive. A previous meeting drew about 30 attendees.
“We know we’re swimming against the current,” he said, adding that the protest aims to elevate diplomacy in the national debate and counter the notion that peace advocacy is naive.
