The Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management has classified four beaches in Sweden as having poor water quality: Ängbybadet Östra in Lake Mälaren, Hallarum in Karlskrona, Vikingstrand in Helsingborg, and Tumlehed in Gothenburg.
The rating is based on water sample results from the past four years, according to the agency. Ema Glad, an investigator at the agency, noted that the classification does not necessarily mean the water will be unsuitable for swimming during the 2026 season.
Glad advised swimmers to avoid the water after heavy rain, as it is likely to be contaminated, and to stay out if the water appears cloudy, which may indicate an active algae bloom. Algae blooms are currently affecting many popular swimming spots, including in Stockholm.
