Danish couples rushed to marry on Friday as the date 26-06-2026 offered a memorable numerical symmetry, reports DR.
Copenhagen City Hall scheduled 77 weddings, more than double the usual 30, and extended opening hours to 20:30. Additional ceremonies took place at selected outdoor locations.
In Aarhus, the city hall conducted 16 weddings, while nine more couples were married by the mayor at The Tall Ships Races event. The Folkekirken in Aarhus also organized three drop-in wedding events, including one in the Botanical Garden where demand forced organizers to increase the number of officiants from two to ten. By late afternoon, press advisor Johann Sørensen estimated around 100 couples had married at the drop-in venues.
Hanne Holberg and Peder Lavridsen traveled from Hvidovre to Aarhus to wed in the Botanical Garden, surprising their family. Holberg, who has been with Lavridsen for 12 years and engaged since 2019, said the date and the event made the decision easy. She added that she would not forget the date, given her skill with numbers.
Odense reported 21 weddings, unusually high for a Friday, with a municipal spokesperson noting strong interest in special dates. Sønderborg, which typically hosts only foreign couples on Fridays, saw nine Danish weddings.
Anita Okkels, head of the wedding office in Copenhagen, suggested the appeal lies in the date’s memorability and its aesthetic value for invitations and ceremonies.
Aalborg conducted 12 city hall weddings and a few outdoor ceremonies, a normal volume according to the municipality.
