Sweden’s Transport Agency has warned of potential traffic disruptions as extreme heat grips southern Sweden, with temperatures forecast to reach 35°C in some areas.

The agency cautioned that so-called “bleeding asphalt” could make roads slippery, urging drivers to reduce speed if they encounter shiny black patches and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. Some regional offices have activated contingency plans, with sanding and other measures on standby.

Rail traffic has already been suspended on several routes in Kalmar, Östergötland, and Värmland counties, with further updates expected. The agency has also halted roadside mowing in southern Sweden and repositioned a water tanker to assist in fire prevention and suppression. Tracked vehicles are available for emergency services, the agency stated.

Earlier this week, a freight train derailed near Bollebygd, causing major disruptions between Stockholm and Gothenburg. The Transport Agency suspects a sun kink—rail distortion caused by heat—may have been missed during inspections following reports from train drivers.

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute has issued heat warnings for much of southern Sweden and classified fire risk as “high to extreme” in the region.
