The Faroese government plans to reduce temporary teaching positions in public schools, Education Minister Bárður á Lakjuni told Skúlablaðið, though he acknowledged they will not be eliminated entirely.
For the upcoming school year, 156 teaching positions are advertised—104 temporary and 52 permanent—according to the Faroese Teachers’ Union (Lærarafelagið).
Teachers in temporary roles must reapply annually, with no job security at the start of each school year. A 2025 survey by the Department of Educational Sciences found that 85 people completed teacher training between 2023 and 2025, but only 55 now work in public schools, with just nine in permanent positions.
