Multiple parents at Tampere Steiner School have accused the school’s leadership of failing to address persistent bullying and violence, Finnish broadcaster Yle reports.
The parents claim both students and some teachers have been involved in the abuse. Police have investigated several violence-related incidents linked to the school.
School principal Jari Hildén acknowledges shortcomings in handling bullying and states the school is committed to improving its practices. The board of the association running the school says it takes all bullying seriously and does not tolerate violence in any form.
Police records show a range of offences under investigation since 2019, including assaults resulting in fines and physical injuries. One case involved a sexual violence allegation made by a mother on behalf of her child, though police closed the investigation, citing insufficient evidence. The mother has since filed a complaint with prosecutors, who may order a new probe.
Former principal Jenni Katajisto said bullying interventions were developed and monitored during her tenure. Current principal Hildén says he has no knowledge of any breach of official duty on his part.
Yle based its report on interviews with 13 current or former parents, a student, and a former teacher, as well as written evidence and official documents. Sources were granted anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the case.
