A Helsinki district court has sentenced a 26-year-old man to life in prison for the murder of a 79-year-old man in the Malminkartano neighbourhood in March.

The court also ordered the defendant, Samuel Jaakko Sarka, to pay €40,000 in compensation to the victim’s beneficiaries, along with additional damages and their legal costs.

According to the ruling, Sarka chased the victim, a stranger to him, from Malminkartano railway station before stabbing him three times—once in the back and once in the chest. He also repeatedly struck and kicked the man. The victim briefly escaped, but Sarka pursued him and continued the assault.

Sarka admitted to killing the man but denied it was murder. The court determined the act was carried out in an especially brutal and cruel manner. The verdict is not yet final.
