A decision on a major hotel project in the small coastal town of Lundeborg has been deferred after a local committee opted to send the matter to the municipal council for further discussion.

The Plan and Local Community Committee was set to rule on whether to grant Skanlux permission to build six large guesthouses north of Lundeborg, accommodating up to 300 visitors. Residents, fearing the development would overwhelm the town, protested outside Svendborg Town Hall ahead of the meeting.

Johan Weltzin Kristensen of the Red-Green Alliance, a committee member, pushed for the delay, arguing the project warranted a broader debate. “Frankly, I think this was a mess, and we need a principled discussion about the entire proposal,” he said after the meeting.

Protesters, including Pernille Thorup, welcomed the decision. “We believe a new local plan is needed. We must discuss what should be built on that land instead of this nightmare attempt to push something through,” she said.

Arne Ebsen of the Socialist People’s Party expects the outcome to remain unchanged when the council reconvenes, as a majority already supports granting some, but not all, of the requested exemptions. Skanlux had sought permission to combine buildings in pairs and to integrate shared facilities with the hotel units, exceeding the 350 sqm size limit. While the first request may pass, the second appears unlikely.

The developer, however, sees a preliminary green light, noting majority support for key exemptions. “This is a clear signal that there is a path forward, but also that work is needed to adapt the project,” he said, adding that he would invite residents to dialogue.
