Swedish prosecutors have charged Jonas Falk with four counts of aggravated drug trafficking, alleging he played a “decisive” role in moving 2.5 tonnes of cocaine from South America to Europe between 2020 and 2021, SVT reports.
Prosecutor Lars Lindman said a significant portion of the evidence comes from encrypted chat material from the Sky ECC app, detailing logistics such as shipping companies, ports, and vessel movements. Lindman stated Falk was central to the operations due to his contacts and partial ownership of the cocaine.
Falk, previously acquitted in the 2014 “Operation Playa” drug case, has declined to participate in the investigation. His defence lawyer, Max Ahlgren, argued the case belongs in Spain, where the alleged offences occurred, and suggested the charges stem from Swedish authorities’ frustration following Falk’s acquittal in the Playa trial.
Lindman confirmed Sweden has jurisdiction as Falk is a Swedish citizen and that Spain has shown no interest in taking over the case. Only one of the four alleged offences is under active investigation in Spain.
