The Faroese High Court has upheld a lower court’s conviction of a 36-year-old Polish man for rape and sexual assault on a street in Sandá on 28 April 2024, public broadcaster KVF reports.

The man was sentenced to secure psychiatric detention and ordered deported from the Faroe Islands. He will serve his sentence in Denmark.

The court also ordered him to pay the victim compensation of up to 200,000 Danish kroner for pain and suffering, as well as lost earnings. He must additionally cover the prosecution’s legal costs.

The appeals panel and legally trained judges in the Eastern High Court took 20 minutes to confirm the severe penalty imposed by the Faroese court.
