Russia now escorts shadow fleet tankers with warships

Russia has begun deploying warships to escort oil tankers operating in its shadow fleet, according to an analysis by Swedish public broadcaster SVT.

Despite the militarisation, the move may unexpectedly benefit Sweden and NATO, defence sources told SVT. The presence of naval escorts increases transparency, as the vessels are easier to track and monitor.
