Provinssi festival strengthens main stage as foreign acts bring larger productions
Foreign headliners at this year’s Provinssi festival in Seinäjoki are arriving with productions up to twice the size of previous years, forcing organizers to reinforce and reposition Finland’s largest outdoor stage, festival director Ville Koivisto told Yle.
British band Bring Me The Horizon now requires eight trucks instead of four, while US group Bad Omens has similarly expanded its setup. Koivisto said the scale initially came as a surprise.
“Yes, we had to rub our eyes a bit when the size became clear,” he said.
The main stage, supplied by Akun tehdas, measures 40 meters wide, 20 meters deep, and 19 meters high. This year, certain structures have been strengthened and the stage moved forward to accommodate the larger truck fleets behind it.
Growing productions also demand more backstage space and catering, with over 200 people working daily behind the main stage alone. While the trend is most pronounced among international acts, Finnish artists are also scaling up.
Koivisto noted the expansion reflects audience expectations for big shows on big stages, though smaller, intimate performances remain part of the festival’s appeal. The three-day event begins today and runs through Saturday.
