Strong earthquakes in Venezuela have already triggered a series of smaller aftershocks, with more expected, according to seismologist Björn Lund of Uppsala University, speaking on SVT’s Morgonstudion.

Lund warned that further tremors could endanger rescue workers operating in damaged buildings at risk of collapse. He added that a larger aftershock cannot be ruled out, with the highest risk in the coming weeks—though aftershocks may continue for years.

“Two or maybe three,” Lund said of the potential duration.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) estimated overnight that tens of thousands could die in total, based on factors such as terrain, population density, and local geology, Lund explained.

“Unfortunately, it is likely that we will see over 1,000 fatalities,” he said.
