Five municipal councillors in Runavík who sued the Finance Ministry to overturn a decision cancelling a full municipal election are expanding their legal case, deputy mayor Tóri Højgaard said outside the courthouse in Tórshavn.
Højgaard, one of the five, confirmed they are challenging the Finance Ministry’s takeover of the case from the Justice Ministry after the government changed in December 2025.
The Eastern High Court acquitted the chairman of the Oyndarfjørður polling station of electoral fraud but stated in its ruling that “one cross on the ballot in question was not made by a person voting for Jonhard Danielsen.”
Højgaard argued the acquittal does not resolve whether a full election must be held in Runavík. He cited inconsistencies, including what he called an “illogical conclusion” from the court that a full election should still take place, which could replace the entire municipal council.
“How can we prepare for decisions scheduled in this period?” he asked, adding the case will continue in court and that a possible election may not occur until the end of the electoral term.
