Norway is bracing for a surge of extreme heat as a warm air mass from Europe moves north, with parts of Østlandet expected to reach temperatures near 30°C in the coming days, Dagbladet reports.

Meteorologist Siri Wiberg warned that a heatwave—defined in Norway as five consecutive days with temperatures of at least 27°C at the same measuring station—is likely. The highest temperatures are forecast for inland areas such as Kongsberg and Nesbyen, though Oslo and Drammen may also see significant warmth. Saturday is currently projected as the hottest day, but temperatures could exceed 30°C from Thursday through Sunday.

Wiberg did not rule out new heat records and noted the possibility of tropical nights, where temperatures remain above 20°C overnight.

The Red Cross urged caution, particularly at large outdoor events like Pride, Tons of Rock, and the Norway-France football match on Friday. Jarle Bjørge Øverland, leader of the Red Cross Rescue Corps, advised attendees to drink water regularly, eat properly, and take breaks from the sun to avoid dehydration, heatstroke, and exhaustion. The organisation also warned against using alcohol to quench thirst, as it has a dehydrating effect.

Wiberg echoed the call for vigilance, recommending people stay hydrated, cool down, and avoid outdoor activity during peak heat, typically between 14:00 and 17:00. She also stressed the risks to children, the elderly, and pets, urging people not to leave them in parked cars or walk dogs on hot asphalt.
