Every household in the Faroe Islands will have access to broadband technology equivalent to fibre optics, though not necessarily through physical fibre connections, according to a report by Kringvarp Føroya.

Føroya Tele has committed 100 million kroner to its subsidiary P/F Net over the next four years, at 25 million kroner annually, to ensure high-quality broadband coverage nationwide, said company director Kristian R. Davidsen.

The original “Fibre to the Home” project, which aimed to bring fibre optic cables to every Faroese household, has proven significantly more expensive than anticipated. Initial estimates placed the cost at under 20,000 kroner per household, but current figures now exceed 30,000 kroner. To date, approximately 270 million kroner has been spent, with around 10,900 fibre connections installed. Despite this, many households remain unconnected.

The project has already exceeded its budget by 90 million kroner.
