Finland’s Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) will investigate the balcony railing involved in a fatal fall in Vantaa’s Tikkurila district, public broadcaster Yle reports.

A man in his 30s fell through the glass section of his balcony railing on Midsummer Eve. Police are treating the incident as an accident.

Tukes will examine whether the railing and its design meet current standards, according to senior inspector Petri Kulmala. The agency will identify the manufacturer and verify if the product was built to present requirements.

Kulmala said Tukes will also check if similar railings remain on the market. Different parts of balcony railings have separate standards: the aluminium frame and fixings have one set, while the glass section has another.

Standards for glass sections ensure the structure can withstand specified wind, linear, and point loads. By law, railing structures and glazing must endure usage loads such as leaning on the glass or accidental impact, Kulmala said.

Tukes is currently awaiting building design documents and other details from Vantaa’s building supervision to determine the railing manufacturer and type. The investigation is expected to take several weeks.
